This programme is for outdoor recreation staff who may be assisting group leaders, undertaking activities in familiar, low-technical outdoor environments.  

Completing the Assistant Outdoor Leadership certificate will arm you with the skills to provide top-notch assistance in leading groups in the outdoors.

To enrol in this programme, you need to be working in the outdoor recreation sector, in a paid job, self-employed, or as a volunteer with regular and consistent shifts.

This 40-credit qualification is designed to be completed in 6 to 10 months.

You'll be trained, observed and assessed in the workplace.

Key learning areas include:

  • Assisting with the planning, delivery and review of outdoor activities, within set parameters 
  • Assisting in identifying and managing hazards and risks relevant to participants, site and equipment for outdoor activities, in line with the Safety Management System of the organisation
  • Operating under a framework of kaitiakitanga that includes respect for the tikanga and kawa of local iwi or hapū, sustainability and the environment, while assisting in leading an outdoor activity
  • Communicating with individuals and groups to manage and meet their diverse needs while undertaking activities in familiar, low-technical outdoor environments.

The Assistant Outdoor Leadership certificate is part of the Outdoor Leadership apprenticeship. After completing the certificate, contact us if you're interested in taking your career up a level and enrolling in the apprenticeship.
