This programme is for swim teachers delivering safe and effective swim education in Aotearoa communities.

The Swim Teacher Level 3 certificate will equip you to teach swimming to groups or individuals, no matter their swimming ability. 

To enrol in this programme, you need to be working in a paid job at a pool or an aquatic facility, self-employed, or a volunteer with regular and consistent shifts.

This 40-credit qualification is designed to be completed in about 8 months.

You'll be trained, observed and assessed in the workplace. Some of your assessments will be completed online.

Key learning areas include:

  • Maintaining safety and applying aquatic supervision techniques to ensure a safe and enjoyable aquatic experience for customers
  • Educating customers and promoting facility products and services to enhance customer experiences
  • Applying knowledge of water confidence, water safety, swimming strokes and biomechanics of movement in the water to teach swimming and water safety
  • Teaching swimmers in water safety, survival skills, swimming progressions and techniques to develop safety awareness in aquatic environments. 

The Level 3 certificate is part of the Apprenticeship - Specialist Swim and Water Safety Teacher (Level 4). After completing the certificate, contact us if you're interested in taking your career up a level and enrolling in the apprenticeship.
