New Zealand Certificate in Outdoor Leadership (Level 4)
This programme is for outdoor professionals leading participants in a specific activity, in low-technical but dynamic outdoor environments.
By completing the Outdoor Leadership certificate, you will gain specialised knowledge and skills which you can apply leading groups in your chosen outdoor recreation activity.

To enrol in this programme, you need to be working in outdoor recreation, in a paid job, self-employed, or as a volunteer with regular and consistent shifts.

This 60-credit qualification is designed to be completed in 8 to 12 months.
You'll be trained, observed and assessed in the workplace. Some of your assessments will be completed online.
You will complete the Outdoor Leader Fundamentals module, as well as an activity elective from the list above.
Key learning areas in the Outdoor Leader Fundamentals module are:
- Preparing and leading an outdoor group experience, within defined operating scope, where the emphasis is on participation in low-technical environments, using leadership techniques and strategies
- Leading an outdoor experience under indirect supervision while operating within the safety management system of an organisation, including being able to assess and respond appropriately within an emergency care situation
- Applying a framework of kaitiakitanga that includes respect for the tikanga and kawa of local iwi or hapū, sustainability and the environment.
Once you've achieved your Outdoor Leadership (Level 4) certificate, you will be registered with the New Zealand Register of Recreation Professionals. You can keep your registration current by re-registering every three years.
