This week, Te Mahi Ako joined the nation in celebrating te reo Māori
From 14–20 September 2025, Te Mahi Ako proudly joined Aotearoa in celebrating the 50th anniversary of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week).
Born out of activism in the 1970s, Te Wiki has grown from a single day of recognition to a nationwide celebration of te reo Māori – Ake ake ake, a forever language. This milestone reminds us how far the reo has come, from silence in schools to strength in kura, and from suppression in homes to flourishing in our workplaces and communities.
At Te Mahi Ako, our focus this year was on normalising the everyday use of te reo Māori in our mahi. Throughout the week our kaimahi came together through:
-
Daily karakia and kupu o te rā
-
Guest speakers sharing their personal reo journeys
-
Waiata, kōrero, and whānau activities
-
Fun challenges like reo bingo with kupu Māori.
These activities weren’t just about celebration – they were about weaving te reo Māori into the fabric of our daily work and relationships.
“Kia māhorahora te reo – let’s make it seen, let’s make it heard.”
We close this week with gratitude to everyone who participated, and with a commitment to continue uplifting te reo Māori in our mahi and in our communities. The momentum doesn’t end here – together, we carry the reo forward for the next 50 years and beyond.
Ake ake ake – a forever language.
