Te Mahi Ako is pleased to confirm that the International Lifeguard Training Programme (ILTP) has been fully benchmarked to the New Zealand Certificate in Aquatics – Pool Lifeguard (Level 3).

This alignment provides an additional pathway for learners and employers seeking internationally recognised lifeguard training while ensuring graduates meet New Zealand aquatic industry expectations.

Delivered internationally by Ellis & Associates, the ILTP is used in more than 40 countries and by major aquatic operators including Disney, Atlantis Dubai, Wet N Wild, Six Flags, and community aquatic facilities worldwide.

The programme is currently being delivered in New Zealand through Thrive Spaces and Places, with training led by qualified ILTP instructor Alex Calwell.

Supporting workforce development in the aquatic sector

Te Mahi Ako supports training opportunities that strengthen workforce capability across the recreation and active leisure sector.

The ILTP alignment supports learners and employers by providing:

  • a pathway aligned to the NZ Certificate in Aquatics – Pool Lifeguard (Level 3)
  • integrated lifeguarding, CPR, First Aid, AED, and Emergency Oxygen training
  • practical simulation-based learning
  • internationally recognised operational practices
  • additional workforce development opportunities for aquatic facilities.

The programme combines online learning with a one-day practical training event designed to prepare lifeguards for real-world aquatic environments.

Supporting industry capability

The aquatic sector continues to evolve, with facilities seeking training approaches that support operational readiness, workforce development, and ongoing capability building.

The ILTP places strong emphasis on prevention, vigilance, teamwork, and practical emergency response through live simulation exercises and hands-on learning.

The programme is delivered in a blended format, combining online learning with practical training delivered at aquatic facilities across New Zealand.

Te Mahi Ako recognises the important role existing aquatic training pathways continue to play within New Zealand’s recreation sector.

The alignment of the ILTP to the New Zealand Certificate in Aquatics – Pool Lifeguard (Level 3) reflects Te Mahi Ako’s commitment to supporting high-quality training opportunities that meet the evolving needs of learners, employers, and aquatic facilities across Aotearoa.
