This qualification is for people working as, or preparing to work as, aquafitness instructors.
Already teaching aqua?
You may have developed your skills through years of experience, workplace training or delivering classes without holding a formal qualification.
This qualification gives you the opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge and practical skills, gain a nationally recognised qualification and continue developing your capability.
New to aquafitness?
Build the knowledge, practical skills and confidence you need to plan and deliver effective aqua classes and develop your career in the aquatics and exercise industries.
What will you learn?
You'll develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to instruct aquafitness classes safely and effectively.
Aquafitness principles
Learn about:
- The physical properties of water and how they affect movement
- The differences between water-based and land-based exercise
- The roles and responsibilities of an aquafitness instructor
- Recognising and responding to participants in difficulty
- Learning barriers and learning styles
- Plan, instruct and review your classes
You'll put your learning into practice by:
- Planning aquafitness classes
- Setting learning outcomes
- Selecting appropriate movements and activities
- Using progression and regression to support different participant abilities
- Including appropriate stretches and stretching movements
- Instructing classes
- Gathering participant feedback
- Reviewing your classes and identifying opportunities to improve
As part of the qualification, you'll plan, instruct and review five aquafitness classes.
Your classes must include aqua jogging and a range of other aquafitness movements.
One class will be observed by an assessor or evidence verifier, either face-to-face or via video.

You'll also develop skills and knowledge in:

- Professional behaviour

- Customer service.
Learn while you work
This is a practical, workplace-based qualification designed to fit around your role.
Your assessment includes a combination of:
- Written questions
- Workplace observations
- Practical activities
- Class planning
- Class instruction
- Participant feedback
- Workplace evidence
You'll apply your learning directly in your workplace, with support from your workplace, assessor and Te Mahi Ako team.
A qualification designed around real work

- Updated health and safety tour requirements, including evacuation routes and restricted areas
